On Sunday, Dr. Randeep Guleria, a former director of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in New Delhi, assumed the position of president of the AIIMS in Bilaspur. Dr. Guleria has served as the director of the AIIMS in New Delhi, where he also taught for more than 30 years. A specialized department of pulmonary medicine and sleep disorders was established with his help and efforts at AIIMS, Delhi.
Dr. Guleria has made significant contributions in the fields of lung cancer, asthma, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), respiratory muscle functioning, and sleep disorders. In addition, he serves on the editorial boards of several medical journals, including JAMA: The Journal of the American Medical Association (India), the Indian Journal of Chest Diseases, Lung India, and Chest India.
He is also affiliated with the World Health Organization (WHO) as a member of its Scientific Advisory Group of Experts (SAGE) on immunization and influenza vaccination. It is important to note that Dr. Guleria accepted voluntary retirement on November 13 instead of his scheduled April 2024 superannuation from AIIMS. He later joined Medanta Hospitals in December 2022 after voluntarily leaving AIIMS Delhi.
